Dr. Kevin McAbee first came to Colorado in the mid 1990s after graduating from Cal-Poly San Luis Obispo to attend the world-renowned program at Colorado State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences. He earned his DVM in 1999 and has been a passionate veterinarian ever since.

 

Following vet school, Dr. McAbee went on to complete general and surgical internships before being accepted into one of the best and most rigorous small animal surgical residencies in the country at The Animal Medical Center in New York City. After an intensive four years in New York, Dr. McAbee returned to Colorado after finishing his residency and became board-certified in small animal surgery in 2006. He has been practicing the art of surgery along the Front Range of Colorado for most of his career.

 

After helping thousands of animals and their owners for over a decade at busy specialty hospitals, Dr. McAbee launched Spire in 2015. His mission is to provide specialty veterinary surgery with excellence, the highest ethics, and great compassion, without his patients or their owners having to leave the comfort and trust of their family veterinary practice.

Dr. McAbee feels extremely fortunate to be able to help animals every day while doing what he loves.

 

Dr. McAbee has extensive experience in all aspects of veterinary surgery including orthopedic, neurologic, and oncologic surgery. He has advanced training in minimally invasive orthopedic surgery such as arthroscopy, has published papers on this topic, and teaches courses nationally to veterinarians as a consultant for Arthrex VetSystems. In addition to TPLO, arthroscopy, and other orthopedic procedures, Dr. McAbee enjoys the challenge of oncologic surgery and has years of experience in this extremely difficult subset of veterinary surgery.

 

When he’s not busy being a surgeon, Dr. McAbee enjoys spending time with his family, taking advantage of the Colorado outdoors, and exploring the microbreweries of Northern Colorado. He and his wife have three very lively small children, two cats, two pond frogs, and one goldfish that keep their household vibrant and full of love.
